Coaching vs. Counseling vs. Consulting

People often ask me how coaching differs from counseling or consulting. The coaching process begins with where you are now in your life and focuses on where you want to be in the future. Together we identify the gaps between your current place and what you desire. Everybody uses their past to operate from. The issue is how you use your previous behavior patterns.

In coaching, there is an assumption of mental health. If there is healing to be done before you can move forward, counseling can be a wonderful way to bring you to a present place that works. Counselors work with those seeking emotional or mental health. Consultants engage their expertise in a given industry or situation to deliver a specific end result. The responsibility for producing answers typically rests with the consultant. A consultant is usually an answer giver vs. an answer revealer.

Coaching emphasizes the personal growth and confidence that stems from the client’s responsibility for their results. As your coach, I am ethically responsible to stay within my area of expertise and training.
